The Story of Bijli Mahadev:
It is believed that a demon named Kulanta transformed himself into a huge serpant and grew exponentially in size unti reaching today’s Mathan village in Spiti Valley (18kms from Kullu). His idea from there was to obstruct the Beas River (Vyas Nadi) and then submerge all the beings around. Having observed this, Lord Shiva battled Kulanta by thrashing his head with Trishul. The thrashed demon transformed into a mountain range, which today covers the Rohang Pass and further.
It is also believed that Lord Shiva appeared here upon Vashishta Muni’s prayer to protect living beings from the harmful effects of electrically-charged particles. A big electric current was believed to have occurred at the juncture of Parvati Beas rivers, and so is Bijli Mahadev here to observe that.
Another interesting legend says that Lord Shiva has ordered Lord Indra to create bolt once in every 12 human years to balance the effects across the universe.
